Welcome to Hope Can Heal Counselling Centre
Asking for help is difficult and by the time a person is reaching out for professional help the problem often times feels unmanageable. We applaud your courage in taking this first step. It's our mission to guide you towards a more fulfilling quality of life. Together we will develop a plan where you are in control of the topics, pace, and length of services while Elizabeth actively walks along side you on this journey.
Working with teenagers and young adults, people with Learning Differences, Anxiety, Family Conflict, Depression, Stress Management, and Trauma Recovery.
Many children with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Dyscalculia get lost, and or/mistreated (due to a lack of understanding). This may cause tremendous upheaval for the entire family with devastating long term effects. Elizabeth’s goal is to help each child and family process the struggles, heal the school trauma, and enhance self love knowing the true gifts of how your child's brain work.
Teenagers are Elizabeth's favorite age group to work with, especially the ones who are not interested in therapy or commonly referred to as "challenging or resistant." She connects with each person where they are and allows the relationship to guide the pace of the sessions. Incorporating structured activities to ensure goals are being met.
Is your child not living up to their academic potential, have you noticed they are becoming more internal or shutting down, disagree with their choices, maybe they are acting out in ways you've never expected? Parents often blame themselves. This is not your fault. Elizabeth can provide tools to understand patterns, identify alternate ways of communicating, assist in referral process for appropriate diagnosis, and provide a safe place to discuss teenage angst.
Elizabeth is eager to shift the perspective of people with learning differences from being compared to people who are neurotypical as it implies neurodiversity is "not typical or normal." Yes, people with learning differences struggle immensely in certain areas. However, they also have immense talents to think outside the box, problem solve, increased observation sklils to name a few. With the right supports people can thrive. Differences are differences not better or worse. Lets help your family cope with the challenges and build self esteem by finding their strengths.
Please remember that if your child is having "behavioural" issues that doesn't mean they are bad kids, lazy, don't care, or any other description. They are struggling. Elizabeth can provide hands on techniques to practice and apply to everyday life.
Elizabeth has extensive experience working with people to manage stress and anxiety when performing exams, sports, and high pressure situations.
Elizabeth incorporates an Integrative Approach ensuring the person has healthy coping skills to manage the emotional intensity of trauma recovery to build healthy and loving relationships from an Attachment Theory. Cognitive Behavioural Techniques and Person Centred Approaches ensure the therapeutic relationship is safe for you to feel heard, disclose difficult topics, and experience a relationship with healthy boundaries, mutual respect, the ability to resolve conflict when it arises in a safe manner, and recover the relationship. Thus, experiencing a healthy attachment to practice where you are able to transfer the skills to your life outside the therapeutic environment.
